Pix Scams: How the Special Return Mechanism works and how to recover your money

In recent years, Pix has become one of the main payment methods in Brazil. Thanks to its speed and convenience, it allows transfers to be made in seconds, 24/7, at no cost to individuals. According to data from the Central Bank, 76.4% of the Brazilian population already uses Pix for payments and transfers.

This widespread adoption has brought many benefits, such as easy instant payments, elimination of banking fees for transactions like TED and DOC, and broader access to financial services. However, the same speed and convenience have also created opportunities for scammers.

The rise of Pix scams in Brazil

With more people using Pix, criminals have developed new ways to commit fraud, known as Pix Scams. These range from direct approaches, like fake requests using social engineering, to more elaborate schemes, such as fake e-commerce websites and cloned WhatsApp profiles.

According to a study by ACI Worldwide, a company specializing in payment services, R$ 2.2 billion was lost to online fraud in Brazil in 2023 alone. The study also estimates that this number could exceed R$ 12 billion by 2028, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.

In response to this alarming scenario, the Central Bank of Brazil created a mechanism to help minimize consumer losses and provide a more effective solution for financial scam victims: the Special Return Mechanism (MED).

This mechanism was designed to facilitate the recovery of amounts transferred via Pix in cases of fraud, scams, or operational errors. Now, with the MED in place, financial institutions have a specific protocol to follow, speeding up the process and improving the chances of recovering the funds.

Step-by-step: How to recover your money through MED

If you realize that you made a Pix transfer by mistake, were scammed, or had your money fraudulently diverted, follow these steps to activate the MED:

  1. Contact your bank immediately: You can request MED within 80 days of the Pix transfer, but the sooner, the better, as the chance of recovery decreases with time.
  2. Explain the situation and provide all relevant information: The bank will assess whether your case qualifies under MED criteria.
  3. If accepted, the funds will be temporarily frozen in the recipient’s account: This prevents the scammer from withdrawing or transferring the money.
  4. The bank has up to 7 days to investigate the case: During this period, it will determine if the transaction was truly fraudulent or made in error.
  5. If the fraud is confirmed, the money will be returned to your account within 96 hours. If not, the frozen amount will be released to the recipient.

⚠️ Important: The money can only be recovered if there are still funds in the scammer’s account. If the fraudster has already withdrawn or moved the money, the bank can’t issue an immediate refund — which is why acting quickly is so crucial.

MED also applies to banking errors

In addition to scams and fraud, MED can be used in cases of operational errors made by the bank. For example, if a system failure causes a duplicate Pix transaction without the user’s consent.

In such cases, the bank must investigate the error, and if confirmed, the funds must be returned within 24 hours.

Tips to protect yourself from Pix scams

Although MED is an important tool to reduce financial losses, the best protection is prevention. Here are some essential tips to avoid falling for scams:

  • Always double-check recipient details before confirming a Pix transfer. Typos can send your money to the wrong person.
  • Be suspicious of urgent transfer requests. Scammers often use urgency to pressure victims.
  • Avoid sharing your Pix key publicly. Only share it with people you trust.
  • Use random Pix keys instead of sharing your CPF, phone number, or email. Random keys reduce data exposure during transactions with strangers.
  • Use payment links and dynamic QR codes. These expire after use or have set validity, limiting exposure of your Pix key.
  • Enable bank notifications on your phone to monitor real-time transactions.
  • Be wary of “too good to be true” deals. If an online store offers prices far below the market and only accepts Pix, investigate before paying.
  • Activate two-factor authentication on your banking app. This helps block access even if someone tries to hack your account.

While MED is a powerful tool for recovering funds in cases of fraud or error, it does not guarantee that the money will always be returned. As mentioned, recovery is only possible if the scammer’s account still has funds.

Also, the recovery process may vary depending on each bank’s internal policies and processing times. Some banks may act quickly, while others may take longer to analyze and respond.

That’s why prevention is still the best protection. Staying alert to scams, being cautious with suspicious transactions, and acting fast when you detect a problem are key actions to ensure your financial safety.
